Hysterectomy Q & A

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all of your uterus, the region of your body where a baby develops. Following this type of procedure, you won’t be able to become pregnant.

If you also need your ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as part of a hysterectomy, you will begin menopause, the phase of life where your menstrual periods stop for good.

Dr. Canby offers several surgical options for a hysterectomy procedure, including:

  • Laparoscopy
  • Robotic surgery
  • Traditional hysterectomy

If you have endometriosis, a condition where the endometrial lining of the uterus begins growing outside of the uterus, or excess scar tissue, Dr. Canby can also perform a surgical procedure, known as an ablation, to remove this tissue without the need for a hysterectomy.

Why do I need a hysterectomy?

Dr. Canby may recommend a hysterectomy if you have endometriosis and ablation surgery isn’t successful or possible. Other reasons you may need a hysterectomy include:

  • Fibroids
  • Uterine cancer
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Uncontrolled vaginal bleeding

Dr. Canby can determine if you need a hysterectomy based on your medical history, your existing condition, and your family planning considerations.

What is a laparoscopic hysterectomy?

Dr. Canby can perform a laparoscopic surgery to remove your uterus, which requires only small incisions in your abdomen. She inserts a slender laparoscope that contains a small camera, which allows Dr. Canby to view the internal structures of your body on an external monitor. She removes small pieces of the uterus through the tiny incisions.

In robotic surgery, Dr. Canby relies on computer-guided technology to perform the surgical removal of the uterus. This type of surgery allows her to complete the procedure with more precision, using only small incisions and special surgical instruments.

What are the benefits of laparoscopic and robotic hysterectomies?

Because Dr. Canby only needs small incisions to remove the uterus, you can expect to heal faster than with traditional open surgery. You can also benefit from these types of minimally invasive surgeries due to a shorter hospital stay.

Other benefits of laparoscopic and robotic hysterectomies include:

  • Less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Reduced risk for infection

Dr. Canby can determine if this type of minimally invasive surgery is right for you during your evaluation.
